Quote anjan_c2007 Replybullet Topic: Peugeot's Bad Dream and Innings in India
    Posted: 26 Jan 2008 at 8:14pm

With all the international manufacturers making a beeline here in India to have a ,market pie in our markets, its surprising that Peugeot, one of Europe's and even the African continents most popular brand, is staying away and not even talking about India in any forum.
Thats because they had two very bad dreams in India. One was the Peugeot Sportif moped launched in 1984 by m/s Chamundi Mopeds India Ltd, Mysore. This was a 65 cc moped in metallic colours with self starter in 1984. It also had indicators and five spoke alloy rims in its higher version- much ahead of its times. The cost  an awesome Rs 6500 for the top version and maybe around Rs 5500 for the base version. For a few thousand more one could have bought the Bajaj Super that had huge waiting lists. Other mopeds cost Rs 4000 to Rs 5000. the Sportif soon bombed saleswise and the manufacturer had to wind up.
Next Peugeot came in with Premier Automobiles Ltd through a joint venture called PAL Peugeot (plant in Kalyan (Mah))in the mid 1990's and launched the 309, in its outdated avatar. This cost upward of Rs 5L for the petrol and around Rs 6.0 to 6.5 L for the diesel.  Being an outdated model in league with the Astra, Cielo, Esteem and Escort in the C segment this venture soon flopped. There was a dispute later between PAL , India and Automobiles Peugeot,France.
The only success Peugeot has had here is with the Peugeot XDP 540 and the  XD3P diesel engines that have powered Mahindra jeeps since 1980.
I ve driven thousands of kilometers on Mahindra jeeps using these engines across the length and breadth of our country,   and found them extremely rugged and very suitable for our rural conditions. Lately, these Peugeot engines have outlived their lives and are not able to withstand the Euro III norms - the 2523cc engine  under the Bolero's bonnet  is gone I believe. The DI has replaced it fully perhaps in the Bolero range.

Cannot agree more. I owned a Peugeot 205GL in the UK (1989-91). This car was about 5 years old when I bought and was a beauty. It had the older 4-speed box (later models were 5-speed) and would cruise at 80-85mph all day. The 1124 engine was also a beauty. The 309 in India was the saloon version of the car and somehow bombed. I guess it was poor marketing and support, which did it in.

Tying up with premier is a huge mistake as they cant seem to be do anything right when restrictions were on they managed to do well not because the fiat 1100d was better, but only because the amby was worse. Peugeot is an excellent brand and while their designs might seem a little quirky (most french cars are) they were sturdy end proven. Pity it had to end this way

Peugeot had a brilliant suspension for low speed rural run but the engine was tad underpowered.

Yes the Peugeot would have been ideal for our kind of roads and conditions. These cars slog it out in hostile terrains in Africa in the old French colonies.I think if the Japanese would'nt have excelled making cars and captured worldwide markets, with their economical and reliable cars , the French cars were the best bet for us.
Yes as roomy puts it most French cars look quite quirky that way. All their designers are perhaps taught that way in their schools of design.

Your are right Renault is part of Renault-Nissan. Sorry for the mix up.

What confused me was that they all shared the engine plant, as did Volvo and Saab.

even after the fiasco the company never tried to redeem its lost pride...at the time there were huge cancellations and the company was not able to cope with the huge repayments and delays caused more injury to the existing prooblems...i think the company was never serious about our market and even now they seem to have no plans to come here...
